The Department of Surgery, UCMS and GTB, Hospital is committed to render high quality patient care, to educate medical students and surgical residents in surgical procedures and techniques, and to develop meaningful research programs in basic and clinical surgical science.
Besides providing routine surgical care to patients, the Department of Surgery also provides specialized services like diagnosis and therapeutic gastro-intestinal endoscopy; basic and advanced laparoscopic surgery; reconstructive surgery for benign and malignant breast conditions, endourology for treatment of urinary calculus, urinary bladder tumors, and prostatic disease, and anorectal surgery for complex anal fistulas;. The Department is organizing a multidisciplinary teaching Module on Prevention and Control of Injury for undergraduate medical students The Department actively participates in National Family Welfare Programme for non-scalpel vasectomy (NSV) operations. A regular basic surgical skill training programme is conducted for MBBS students and interns posted in the department.
The Department has a large number of publications in reputed national and international journals.
SERVICES PROVIDED
Department of Surgery provides management of both emergency and elective cases.
Emergency cases include trauma, and surgical emergencies like perforation peritonitis, acute appendicitis, intestinal obstruction, gastrointestinal bleed, soft tissue infection, abscess, acute abdomen (pancreatitis, cholecytitis, etc.).
Elective cases include-

Surgical Oncology - A wide variety of complex surgical oncology procedures
Urological procedures-Renal stones, ureteric stones, bladder stone, PUJ obstruction, uretheral stricture, benign hyperplasia of prostate
Gastrointestinal surgery-Esophageal stricture, peptic ulcer disease, cholelithiasis, pseudocyst, of pancreas, splenic abscess, hypersplenism, chronic pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel, diseases, rectal prolapse, anal fissure, perianal fistula
Thoracic surgery - benign and maliognant conditions
